What exactly does the word "need" mean?

Main Post:

I'm really confused about the meaning of this word.

Does it refer to the biological or emotional urge OR does it refer to the thing which satiates that urge?

Is "water" a need OR is "thirst" a need?

I would say that thirst is a need and not water, on second thought I think water. This because we say "I need water", which gives the idea that water is a need.

To think deeper on it, the sentence probably means they need a satiator, which is not the need.

"My parents fulfill all your needs". This could mean they give you all your needs or fulfill them by giving you satiators. I lean towards the latter. This seems right to me.

Top Comment: A need is something that is required for some reason. We need food and water to live. A television needs electricity to function. That's the main definition. Water is a need. Thirst is a condition that needs water to fix.

What are the differences in meaning between 'need', 'need to' and 'have to'?

Main Post:

The grammar is obviously different but when are the meanings not the same? Consider these sentences:

  1. In my job I have to work from nine to five
  2. You've got to try this recipe—it's delicious.
  3. There’s the doorbell. It has to be George
  4. Do you have to hum so loudly?
  5. All you need to do is complete this form.
  6. You needn't bother asking Rick — I know he's too busy.
  7. It's OK - you needn't pay for that phone call.
  8. You don't need to pay for emergency calls in most countries.
  9. Need I come in tomorrow?

Can I use 'need', 'need to' and 'have to' in all those sentences?

Top Comment: Need (no "to") + object. "Expresses that an item or thing is needed." Need + to + base form of verb. "Obligation." This obligation is something that must be done, generally in order to do a different subsequent action. Have + to + base form of verb. "Obligation." This obligation is something that must be done, regardless of other things.

Is "Need have" right?

Main Post:

So a few days ago I was in English class and I saw that my teacher had written on the board one of the answers, the question was: "why do you work?", and she had written that one of the answers was "because i need have money" i went ahead and asked if it wasn't wrong, asking if it wouldn't be "Need to have money" but she assured me it wasn't wrong.

I'm confused can you actually use Need have?

(Btw some friends told me that you could but not in the modern English so yea..)

Top Comment: You are correct, and your teacher is wrong. There are obscure or archaic uses of "need have," but none that work in your example. Correct options are: "Because I need money." "Because I need to have money."
